Meat is fresh and cheap. Most cuts are the same as US cuts, but watch the T-bones -- the butcher steals the fillet. Hungry for a hamburger on that new barbe? Better ask for steak mince or you might end up with beetroot in that patty. Or try a banger -- good with onions. Of course not as good as Wisconsin bangers my traveling Wisconsin food expert tells me. Watch the hoggit, too. It's one- year-old lamb, not pork. The beef seems a little gamier--possibly fresher.

When we're in the Taranaki area -- where they filmed The Last Samurai -- we stay at:

Hawera: Te Ngutu-O-Te Manu Historic Reserve near Kapuni Natural Gas Plant. W T El Pts (Water, toilet, electricity) Moderate Charges. Hawera is a a reserve in the middle of farm country. Stop at the house near the entrance. The kids will help you find Mum, then park where you want. Pay 1 $NZ if you want electricity. Like most reserves, it's a large grass area surrounded by bush. In the morning, take a walk along the bush path and visit the fantails. They'll flick past your nose, sit on the branch next to you and fan out their tail.

Quinney's Bush near Nelson (SI) was started by Ray Quinney in 1961 to raise funds for a new vicarage at Tapawera. Back then, it had a long-drop. The long-drop is long gone but it's still a back to basics family camp that doesn't tolerate "noisy parties, loud music or drunken behavior" so behave yourself. If you want a hot shower--drop some chips in the burner and wait a while. Really a nice place to stay -- I just prefer my own shower.

Farm Parks are coastal lands set aside to protect native vegetation, historic sites and scenic areas-- including farmland. Farmed by the Department of Land and Survey, you can wander through and watch them shear and dip sheep or anything else happening on a working farm--maybe more than you care to see. Farm life can get a little bloody at times. Te Paki Farm Park is near Cape Reinga(NI). Marlboro Titirangi Farm Park is in the Marlboro Sounds near Picton (SI).
