FAQs

  • Do I Need a Visa?

Only if you're staying more than 90 days -- if so, just send your passport to your local New Zealand Consulate. They'll stamp it and mail it back. No fee, but you pay return postage. You're also expected to have a round trip ticket.

  • Is It Hard to Book Ferry Passage Across Cook Strait?

Time your passage so you don't end up wandering Wellington in the middle of the night. Make your reservations in advance and show up on time or expect a big fare hike.

  • What About Driving a Motorcaravan Around Auckland

If you're new to the left side of the road driving, stay at the Top 10 Holiday Park in Manukau City and catch a bus. Pick up a schedule at the desk. Even if you're comfortable driving, it's hard to find a place to park in Auckland.

  • Where are the Hobbit Houses?

Mata Mata (NI). Camp behind the airfield -- built by the US during WWII. Enjoy the three day air show while you're there.

  • Where's that Art Deco Town?

Napier (NI) is on Hawks Bay. Destroyed in an earthquake in 1931, it was rebuilt in Art Deco style. Stay at the Kennedy Park Top 10 in Napier or the Raceview Motel and Holiday Park in Hastings and watch the gallops.

  • Where do I Find a Good Restaurant?

Ask around.  Higher priced restaurants often have venison on the menu and serve alcohol. Some restaurants are BYOB and charge a corkage fee. The menu price includes taxes. Tipping is not expected. Fish and chips are popular.

  • What About Fishing?

Book with a guide in the Bay of Islands for marlin, shark or dorado. The South Island has salmon. New Zealand is famous for its world record Brown and Rainbow Trout.
